California Mulls New Emissions Regulations: More Electric, Hydrogen Cars

California’s emissions regulations are some of the strictest in the country, so when it announces that it may change its regulations on new cars, the other 49 states take notice. The state announced it will begin considering new regulations that seek to drastically increase the number of ultra-low or zero-emissions vehicles on the road by 2025.

M.I.T. CityCar, Renamed Hiriko, Is Headed to Production

At European Union Commission headquarters in Brussels on Tuesday, the commission chief, José Manuel Barroso, inspected a small city-car prototype. It was the commercial version of the long-gestating CityCar from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab.

Mr. Barroso posed for pictures inside the vehicle, which has been renamed the Hiriko, the Basque word for urban. The trial production of 20 cars and a pilot program are scheduled to begin next year in Spain’s Basque region, at Vitoria Gasteiz, not far from Bilbao.

Toyota lifts Japan 2012 forecast on eco-subsidy

Toyota Motor Corp on Wednesday lifted its 2012 domestic sales forecast to 1.63 million vehicles, up 6.5 percent from its previous prediction and 36 percent higher than 2011, after the government last month decided to re-introduce subsidies for fuel-efficient cars.

Edmunds Says Kia Sales Rose 83 Percent in New York

Kia experienced exceptional growth in the New York metropolitan area in 2011, with sales increasing 83 percent in 2011, according to Edmunds.com. Its Web site compared new-car registration data provided by Polk, the automotive forecasting company, from January through November 2010 with the same 11-month period in 2011. Kia’s performance made it the fastest-growing automotive brand in the metropolitan area among the 35 brands included in the Edmunds analysis.

$4.62 Million Mercedes Gullwing Leads Strong Auction Weekend in Arizona

As the auctions in and around Scottsdale, Ariz., over the weekend proved, the uppermost reaches of the collector-car hobby remain virtually unfazed by the various crises roiling the global economy.

A 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, one of 29 alloy-bodied Gullwings to have been produced by the German automaker, shattered preauction estimates on its way to a $4.2 million gavel price and a $4.62 final sale with buyer’s premium. As Rob Sass noted in his preview of the sale, a bidder would have found little fault with the example consigned by Gooding & Company:
